Attack in Hurghada

Egypt: increased safety risk

Last Friday, 08.01.2016, an attack took place at a hotel in the popular Egypt seaside resort Hurghada. An Austrian couple got hurt. The background of the attack is still unclear.

There is no travel warning for the several popular seaside resorts. A partial travel warning for the Sahara area and northern Sinai region already existed before the attack. The Austrian Foreign Ministry (BMEIA) increased the general security level for Egypt to "very real increased security risk of terroristic or other attack". Unfortunately, the travel information of the BMEIA is only available in German.

ECC Austria recommends to carefully follow the current media reports regarding Egypt.

If you are planning to travel to Egypt, please find information about your rights in the section "Danger at destination". The sample letters may help you to address the travel agency, hotel or airline. Furthermore, the ECC operates a free of charge service hotline (available under 01/588 77 63, Mo-Fr, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.).

As of midnight tonight, i.e. as of 00:00 on 19.12.2020, a travel warning issued by the Austrian Foreign Ministry applies to practically the entire world. 10 states are exempt from this. What does this mean for a planned trip for the holidays?
